Lifestyle Changes
I would like to talk a little about personal goals that we all desire at one time or another. Clients come to me on a daily basis and most of the time they would like to change something physical about themselves. Our bodies are a direct reflection of our lifestyles. If we wish to change something within ourselves, we must change our lifestyle. This may be our eating habits or exercise habits or both. The best way to look at what changes need to be made is to keep a lifestyle journal. For one week, write down all your exercise activities, food log, stress levels, and even sleeping patterns. All of these can have a direct impact on our health. After you have logged all this information down, take a look at your entries and determine what changes you can make to put more focus on living a healthier lifestyle. It is real important to make small changes and build on that. You will stick to your new lifestyle longer if you take baby steps. Remember you not only "are what you eat", but you also "are how you live!"

Holiday Challenge
With the holidays creeping up soon, we need to understand that this time of the year is the most important to exercise. Not only will it keep the weight off from those dreaded (but oh so yummy!) holiday treats. Many of us find our stress levels rise as these final months approach. Presents, parties, and travel definitely can have an impact on your stress level as well as your waistline. Find some time to get out and take a walk between the chaos. It will give you a breath of fresh air as well as a clear mind. Also, staying active during the holidays can make your new years resolution a whole lot more achievable and maybe you will have room for a different resolution this year :-)
If you started just a 30 minute daily walk November 1, you could burn 7,869 calories by December 31, 2008. This only takes minimal effort, but will definitely lessen the blow from all those holiday extras. And not to mention you will feel wonderful! What are you waiting for? Get a head start and take a walk!

Willpower
To make anything a habit we must first get through the stage of "establishing". There are points in our lives (which could be everyday) where we decided that we must make some changes in order to reach a certain goal. We usually are at a point where there is a "bad" habit in place that must be broken to make way for the new one. Willpower is the necessity that is required to promote these changes. One trick is to write your goal on a small index card along with why you would like to achieve that goal. Keep this card with you at all times. It is best to write this out when you are all fired out about your goal so that the right reasons are written down that drive you the most. Whenever you feel the urge to stray, pull this card out and bring yourself back to that point of why you are doing this. Sometimes we just need that renewed strength and drive. I believe this previous election has shown many people, never let ANYONE tell you it can't be done. Only you are the one to say "I can't".

Goal Setting
It's a new year! We all know that means gathering that motivation up and starting to eat right and exercise. The sad reality of our resolutions is that most do not achieve thier goals. This is party due to the fact that we shoot for goals that are not realistic or too large and overwhelming to keep our focus and attention.
For example, if you would like to lose 50 lbs, break this goal down into small attainable goals. First aim for 5-10lbs and write a plan on how you will get there. Be as specific as possible. Keep a food diary to help with nutrition and write your workouts into your schedule. The secret is keeping your schedule consistent. Try to keep your calorie range consistant as well as your workout schedule. Your body responds faster if it is able to adapt to a routine. For the first 30-60 days, make sure you keep a log of everything and stick to your plan. It takes this long to establish a habit. This is the hardest stage! Don't give up!

Exciting things are going on here at Elite. We have new classes such as Body Chisel and welcome to our new Pilates Instructor Sharla Mahshie. I have a new rewards program that will be starting in the next few weeks. It is designed to keep you on track and stick with your program. Consistency is the key to your results and to make changes we must challenge ourselves. Remember your health is what decides the mood you are in each day and how productive you are as well. Exercise is a natural mood enhancer. So if you do not have enough energy to exercise, you are thinking backwards. You have to think "I don't have enough energy, I have to exercise!" Try it, you'll be amazed. Also, keep exercise a priority, like brushing your teeth and you are more likely to stick to your program longer and more consistently.
